PROFESSIONAL LEARNING PATH
One of the most striking aspects of self – directed learning in my professional learning path is the way I see myself as a professional teacher who can implement some strategies as the ones referred by Thornton (2010) when she mentions the fact that some considerable steps towards greater learner autonomy in self-directed learning, can be made through simple adaptations to classroom activities or the inclusion of short discussions. Through this viewpoint, I think that the role I have in my context is very important because as a way to increase students’ autonomy and self-directed learning, I need to provide them with the opportunities to expand their views about learning and how to learn. When adapting these kind of classroom activities, I can see myself as a learner too who needs to be involved in her students’ learning process. Consequently, following Thornton’s idea about self-directed learning, it is important for me to see my role a professional who intends to empower her students to be as autonomous as they can be. For this reason, I need to plan in which I analyze my student’s needs and skills, implement the plan, monitor their performance by raising awareness and evaluate the product of that learning process.
